Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) is convinced that in the first half of 2021 not only a corona vaccine will be researched but also approved and used in Europe. He made this forecast regarding the further fight against the corona pandemic on Saturday after a meeting with the heads of leading pharmaceutical companies in Basel at the end of his visit to Switzerland.

Meeting with heads of pharmaceutical companies
After a meeting with representatives of the pharmaceutical companies Roche, Novartis and Lonza, the Chancellor expressed his satisfaction with the state of research. “There are very promising drugs that can significantly reduce the mortality of the disease and also the average length of stay in hospitals.

Kurz appealed to the population to become watchful to eventualities that may come in the fall and winter seasons. “Whenever there are rising numbers, there will be the necessity to react with restrictions, and when the numbers are falling, to allow for relaxation.

Second lockdown to be avoided
In any case, the goal is “to prevent a second lockdown”. But this will only be possible if everyone makes an effort to contribute. “If we all live our lives as normally as possible, but also restrict ourselves in certain areas,” the Chancellor explained.

In an interview with Swiss Television (SRF), Kurz had already previously reiterated his view that the Covid 19 pandemic should last until the summer of next year. “Until then, the pandemic will take some time,” he said. However, he is “very optimistic” about summer 2021.
